The 2016 Leadership Walker County class met on Monday, December 5th to take a tour of various Walker County schools, medical centers, government services, and emergency facilities. After meeting for breakfast at the Walker County Civic Center, the group made their first stop at Primary Healthcare Center's clinic at Gilbert Elementary where medical and dental services are offered to children and adults of the community. The class also visited Walker County Emergency Services (WCES) where they met with fire chief Randy Camp who spoke about fire emergency operations and policies. Principal Wendy Ingram then met the group at Saddle Ridge K-8 in Rock Spring where they were treated to lunch and a guided tour of the campus grounds. The class also learned about Saddle Ridge's Vex Robotics Team, a group of students who are building robots in order to learn about the world of science, technology, engineering and math. Afterward, the staff at the Walker County Government Services Building briefed the class on the duties of the Walker County commissioner, the planning office, and the assessors office. The last stop of the day was at the Smith Planetarium where Walker County students, as well as the public, are provided with an amazing learning environment based around the exploration of the cosmos.
