See Rock City (SRC), Inc. and its board of directors is pleased to announce the promotion of President Susan P. Harris, SPHR, to president and chief operating officer. Harris joined the executive staff at SRC as the director of human resources and organizational development in June 2008 and was promoted to president in February 2013. She serves as an executive leader with full responsibility for operational, cultural and financial performance of a privately held, multi-site hospitality company. Since joining SRC, she has worked extensively in organizational culture and leadership development.
“Susan Harris has inspired the culture of our organization by raising the performance of our staff to the highest level,” said SRC CEO Bill Chapin. “She has instilled hospitality into the way our partners (employees) treat each of our guests and each other at work. This cultural change has been the driving force in the improvement in attendance and profitability at SRC, Inc. with her role as president for the past three years. She has earned her additional responsibilities as the COO. I am confident that our experiential businesses will flourish with increasing attendance and consistently improving financial performance.”
Harris is active in the community as a member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, and serves as a board member of the Chattanooga Theatre Centre and the Chattanooga Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and is also a past board member for the Chattanooga chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management. She currently serves with the 10 Project, and as a volunteer at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Tennessee Academy of Gymnastics Booster Club. She has also been an adjunct faculty member with the University of Phoenix and has served with the Hixson Youth Athletic Association.
Harris is certified by HR Certification Institute (HRCI) as a senior professional in human resources (SPHR) and also holds designation from The Society for Human Resource Management as a senior certified professional (SHRM-SCP). In September 2012, she was awarded the HR Professional Excellence Award by the Tennessee SHRM State Council.
Before coming to SRC, her professional positions included director of human resources for Express Financial Services and director of people development for Chattanooga Group. Harris earned her master of business administration from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2005 and her bachelor of science degree in political science from Berry College in 1990.
